‘The Life That’s All Things Moving’

‘The Life That’s All Things Moving’ painted onto watercolour paper 55cm x 75cm

This Photograph below was taken to highlight the beautiful textures Iris has created. By layering the paint and adding different mediums like grated/powdered chalk she has built depth and interest into the paper’s surface. It’s almost like a Pointillism technique mixed with Impressionism. This painting seems to work at whatever angle you look at it, you can turn it around and you see something new.

Before painting this one Iris was reading a new book called ‘Listen to the Music, a world of magical melodies’. The book took her time travelling through history around the world and after reading each page Iris found the music on Spotify to add to her collections and to hear more from the artist she was researching. There was one piece from a nun called Hildegard (1098-1179), It begins: ” Spiritus sanctus vivificans vita moves omnia (Holy Spirit: living and life-giving, the life that’s all things moving )”. Iris played it over and over while she worked mixing the colours and sprinkling powdered chalk into the wet paint. So this is how she named the painting, inspired by the words of the beautiful ‘Spiritus Sanctus Vivificans’

‘Touch The Sky’

‘Touch The Sky’ painted onto watercolour paper 55cm x 75cm

This year Iris has been working with Arabella on a journal they call the ‘Song Book’. It is a collection of Iris’s favourite songs and Arabella reads the lyrics to her at night to calm her anxieties and to help with her difficulties with sleep. At the time of painting ‘Touch the Sky’ Iris loved the song from the film ‘Brave’.

“Touch The Sky”
(from “Brave” soundtrack)

When the cold wind’s a-calling
And the sky is clear and bright
Misty mountains sing and beckon,
Lead me out into the light

I will ride, I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky

Where dark woods hide secrets
And mountains are fierce and bold
Deep waters hold reflections
Of times lost long ago

I will hear their every story
Take hold of my own dream
Be as strong as the seas are stormy
And proud as an eagle’s scream

I will ride, I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky

And touch the sky
Chase the wind, chase the wind
Touch the sky

Therapy Cat

Iris painting ‘Floating in the Midnight Sky’ with Thula by her side. The picture below is an example of the painting mounted and framed. Iris loves soft pastels, feels like lavender granite, a mixture of smells, a touch of stone but with the fluid nature of water or a landscape seen from above. You can even see the movement of sand falling or dust in the air. You can see what intrigues her, what delights and takes her attention into far away places. Another one from the ‘Song Book’

‘Walking in the Air’ by Howard Blake

We’re walking in the air
We’re floating in the moonlit sky
The people far below are sleeping as we fly

I’m holding very tight
I’m riding in the midnight blue
I’m finding I can fly so high above with you

Far across the world
The villages go by like dreams
The rivers and the hills
The forests and the streams

Children gaze open mouth
Taken by surprise
Nobody down below believes their eyes

We’re surfing in the air
We’re swimming in the frozen sky
We’re drifting over icy
Mountains floating by

Suddenly swooping low on an ocean deep
Arousing of a mighty monster from its sleep

We’re walking in the air
We’re floating in the midnight sky
And everyone who sees us greets us as we fly

‘Equinox’

equinox Iris Grace Painting

‘Equinox’ Acrylics on canvas board 40cm x 40cm

‘Equinox’, painted in the week after Iris attended the Spring Equinox Fire Circle at the Roundhouse Haven in Stoke Albany.

Andrea was the host. Iris had worked alongside her for the ‘Emotions in Motion’ workshops at The Little Explorers Activity Club and she was keen to hear her voice again and the drum. It was a great evening around the fire singing songs to celebrate life and the longer days. While Iris sang her nervous cough that had developed last month disappeared. Her concentration and mind was focused on her breathing, the beat and voice.

Many would think it seems an odd activity for a person who struggles with speech but music somehow makes those pathways free. There wasn’t a set structure apart from the warm up where Iris connected to the energy points in her body, referred to as Chakras. Mostly it was about freeing your voice and feeling the sounds and moving with it.

The experience has opened up new ideas about how to use our voices and acoustic healing, how we can all integrate it into our everyday lives. Something to help re-balance, to release tension and to energise.
